Free Access API FAQs

Is the Free Access API suitable for my needs?
Firstly, this product is intended for use by developers looking to create their own interfaces into the exchange, using the Betfair API. You may use the API in combination with a variety of development languages (.NET, Java, VBA/VB6, C#) to achieve this. If you are NOT a developer, we suggest that you search through the available off-the-shelf products offered by licensed Software Vendors via the Solutions Directory.
Do I need to sign up for the Free Access API?
No. If you are a current and active Betfair user, your account will already be automatically set up to use the Free API. There is no need to contact BDP for permissioning, nor is there any need to fill out any forms.
What is an 'active' Betfair account?
For a Betfair account to be considered 'active', there needs to be at least one transaction dispalyed on the Account Statement at 'My Account' (within the last three months).
What is the difference between the Free Access API and the Full Subscription API?
Firstly, there is no cost for the Free Access API (obviously), while there is a fee for the Full Subscription products. Secondly, there are differences in what API services you can use and the frequency which you can use them. Lastly, there are a couple of extra benefits that only the Full Subscription users have access to; namely Full Subscription users have access to full BDP phone & email support, as well as the API Test environment. For an overview of the differences, please view the Membership Fees & Benefits table.
Can I "upgrade" from the Free Access API to a Full Subscription?
Yes, this won't be a problem - when you want to switch to a Full Subscription, simply fill in the Signup form located in the Membership section, and the BDP will make the switch for you as soon as possible.
How can I get support for the Free Access API?
While Free API users do not have access to direct BDP telephone or email support, we provide all the tools necessary to get started on your development. You will have access to the Developers Forum and the documentation and sample code available at the Support Center. These tools will allow you to interact with fellow developers, stay on top of important system announcements, find solutions to issues, release notes, and so on. A good starting point for any developer is the Developers Center.
What do I need to do to get started?
You're ready to to start developing - all you'll need to know is the following:

  • The Free Access productId, which is "82" - you'll use this along with your Betfair credentials in the Login protocol.
  • The Betfair API WSDL URL's:

  • View the Developers Center, where you can access the Betfair API WSDL, the documentation, and sample code. If you need assistance for a specific development language, try the Developers forum, where you may find tips and solutions by your peer developers. If you get 'stuck', post a topic yourself, and wait for fellow developers or BDP staff to chime in - it shouldn't be long!
